Pros:
|
Cheap and good filtration. No HP loss when used alone
|
|
Cons:
|
With heavy breather modifications such as Spacers, MREV2, Ported Plenum, etc. May result in low gain.

Okay, I've been babling about custom cai and such. Now it's time to work it.
Original Plan: Custom Dual CAI setup by a local Shop. 3.5" Mandrel Bent. HKS dual filter-turbo style. However, after some calculations, I've found out that it's redundant, so I decided to go for reguar single pipe setup for now. After sick and tired of hearing these people on G35Driver babling about "you get what you pay for, better stick to $300 intake, etc." I decided to go for ebay route and agaisnt these idiotic norms. Intake is just a good pipe with correct size and a good flow filter, better spend my money smart
Setup:
1. Ebay Pipe & Hardware
2. AMSoil Nanofiber Air Filter
3. Custom Airbox as heat shield & Air Flow Director
Current Work:
I purchases a cheapo Ebay CAI setup. $72 shipped, red Finish.
Initial Reaction:
It just arrived today. For 72 bucks, I must say that it's quite nice. The Finish is okay, smooth through out. I chose Red finish because my car is red. Come out to be cherry red instead of brigh laser red. Still, it's okay. Function over form is my policy The thickness of the metal is very well done, it's not those cheapo thin ones. Edges are smooth, not rough. They have good standard welds for the bungs and mounting bracket.
Specification:
1. Pipe size, smallest is 3" OD. The Mid pipe short RAM is bigger, 3.5". The CAI extension piece is 3", same as the step down section to the manifold. The angles of the bends are nice, as expected of madrel bent.
2. The Generic air filter that comes with it is pretty nice, not bad. But I'll replace it with AMSoil Nanofiber air Filter, so it's another ~40 bucks.
3. Hardware: Standard Homedepot black hoses and clamps. They included the MAS adapter. Very well made and good weld. Come painted flat black. You can dress up further by choosing better clamps, pretty hoses, and powdercoat the MAS Adaptor to matching color
4. For $120, this setup can't be beat. Pics will be up later. My AMSoil air Filter hasn't arrive yet.
Installation:
I used this as a reference to install. It's pretty straight forward:
http://g-owners.com/article_read.asp?id=28
Things needed prior to installation.
1. 5/8" M-M Hose connector (from Autozone) or longer Breather hose. More than twice as long. I decided to keep the OEM ones since they already have good bends in them. I bought the connector to use with the included hose in the intake kit.
2. Two OEM Clamps: the ones that connect the OEM intake assembly to the body with a small hole on the clamp. The kit included enough clamps, but they're kinda smalls for two places.
Remember to disconnect the battery prior to installation
1. The removal part was both hard and easy.
a. The easy part is the upper area.
b. The hard part is the lower resonator area. I was lazy to remove the bumper, so I'd have to lift the front driver side up, remove the lining, then remove the two bolts that's holding the resonator on. It'd best to have a small flex joint socket wrenches.
c. I also had to cut out a piece of front bumper padding foam for the air to draw in. It's very hard since I didn't remove the bumper, I had to use a very long and sharp knife.
2. Installation is pretty straight forward.
a. Small pipe to the throttle body. Use OEM clamp between TB and Rubber Hose
b. Then the OEM MAF body next. Use OEM Clamp between MAF body and Rubber Hose
c. Followed by by the MAF Adaptor that came with the intake kit - I use the included bolts instead of OEM. They matches better. (NOTE: You can't have (b) and (c) swapped around. This will case the MAF sensor to be backward and will not work. The car will shut off after starting. I made that mistake since I put it together at almost 10PM )
d. Finally is the long pipe. I suggest that you do the followings prior to connect the last pipe.
i. Reroute the OEM breather hose to go under the intake body.
ii. Connect the OEM breather hose to the connector, clamp it, and connect the included hosed to the long tube. Route it away from the AC line
iii. Install the filter beforehand
iv. Install the rubber mount/spacer onto the OEM AC line mount position like described in the guide above.
e. Double check all connecting, plug in MAF sensor, reconnect the battery terminal and start the car. Everything should work fine. If not, check your MAF sensor area again.
f. Reinstall the fenderlining and lower the jack.
REVIEW:
A. PERSONAL:
The result is well notice. The car reponses a lot faster, especially the Throttle body. I let my gf drove in it and she felt the difference right away. The car really kicks in from 4000-6600RPM, VERY FAST. The difference was very noticable. I installed this expecting NOTHING dramatic except for the changes of sound. But the TB does act different.
Milage wise, I'm consistantly getting 21mpg+. I used to get 20mpg before So an average about 0.7-1mpg increase.
For the "Sound" factor, it gives off a whistle sound like a wastegate - just as expected, but not as loud from a SRI system. However, the engine really roar on Full Throttle. Like REALLY REALLY Loud. FREAKING RIDICULOUSLY LOUD. I know I know, I'm suppose to be performance guy but I gotta give credit to it.
Overall, for ~120 bucks, I can't complain. The system is less than 80 shipped from ebay. 40 bucks for the AMSoil EaAu Filter (better than K&N For sure), and couple bucks for misc hardwares, this is well worth it. I think it's very much like that of Injen with a 3.5" Long pipe down to 3" end pipe.
However, the pipe does get hot, just as any other Intake system. My next mod on the list is the Methanol Injection. I may do a custom shield/air box before that, but I don't really see the need.
B. TECHNICAL:
I do not have a Baseline Dyno but Dynoed at 223whp on Sharif's Dyno Dynamic from Forged Performance.
