View Full Version : All that saying....UR SSC Pulleys may be next on my list

My belts are wearing out, and it's the time for replacement.

Since my engine compartment is really dirty (previous owner didn't take care of it so there're rust and sand marks?). It's in need of a cleaning, therefore, I'm thinking of getting UR new SSC set - stock size lightweight to help "lighten" it up.

Any reason not to?

The only reason I could think of is the possibility of Terry selling is Vortech SC for as cheap as Mark's price or even cheaper in the near future (6 mo) and I may end up getting it. Then, the UR sets may not hold it well for the SC. Other than that, I originally planned to go for TT. :wiggle2:

After a lot more extensive researching, I found that UR pulleys may really help. Dyno result may not show real time results, but the response is there. So what do you guys think?

I loved the UR crank pulley that I had on my car. The crank one is the only one that you can't keep with the supercharger (Jeremy had the other 2 still on the Z). The response was definately different (and better). Don't know about the dyno numbers, but the car did feel much more responsive especially around the 3500 rpm's.

Be careful if you live in a hot location. I've heard of several people having overheating problems in the Summer with underdrive pulleys. They slow down the water pump and lower the cooling systems' ability to cool.

^ jb, I've heard about that, and it's because of the underdrive pulleys. I don't think it'll affect it with the stock sized?

We never had a problem with overheating even when used on daily driven cars.

Got no idea how it would perform with FI but on my N/A car, it has been 15K with no problem ...yet.

Removed bad info about underdrive pulleys.

We never had a problem with overheating even when used on daily driven cars. That's the best advice you can get...

It's always better to hear from someone that has actually used the mod you're asking about.

i heard something about bling!!!!!!

u will have no problems with the pulleys ubnless u have a system...no overheating, no fires, no midgets popping out of ur gas tank...run the car on the street and enjoy it!!!! id change em all unless u have a massive system...but n e ways good luck and im do for belts as well...so im thinking about if i wanna blow $300 for a couple horsepower and a better butt dyno feel....lol...im thinking anbf leaning more towards y the hell not every time i think of it...good luck!!

Ugh... your belts dont drive the water pump on a VQ! the timing chaing does that. if you have overheating issuse its not the pulleys. if you ever looked at the belts then you have seen that there is no water pump pulley.

I don't see how stock sized pulleys could cause overheating, no. As I understand it, the people that complained about the loss of cooling capacity said it was because the smaller pulley spun the water pump slower... thus less cooling.

The people with the cooling problem were making back to back runs at the track and running their cars hard in hot weather. I only mentioned it to let you know that some people had a problem.

That's the best advice you can get...

it wasnt because of the pulleys. most likely the hot day and running it with no cruising at speed to cool down or longer periods of time at idle to cool down.

I had a car that had the crankshaft pulley and alternator pulley changed out to lighter ones. It ran fine but the belts squeel/slip when I would turn the air on. It was a V-belt design and not a serpentine. I'm sure that made some diffrence. Something to keep in mind....

Most of my racing information comes from years of racing small block Chevrolets. The funny thing is that I read a thread where people were talking about this. One guy even mentioned that there was a way to overdrive the water pump to offset the underdrive. I didn't mention that because it seemed odd to me.

Thanks for correcting me. I really appreciate it. I would much rather have the facts come out and learn something along the way. I edited one of my earlier threads on this subject, but didn't see an Edit button on my earlier post. I would remove it if I could.

whats the plans for boost. s/c or turbos... turbos go with under drive. s/c go with stock size. simple as that.... but the not so simple part is s/c or turbo...
